A few short questions and you’ll get the right care set for your concern, here on this page.

Hair oil is one of the most versatile care products there is, and at the same time the one most often applied incorrectly. Too much makes hair heavy and greasy; too little has no effect. This guide shows you, step by step, how to use hair oil correctly: for the scalp, for the lengths and as an oil pack.

What can a hair oil do, and what can't it do?

A hair oil is not a miracle cure, but it is an effective care tool. It forms a protective layer around the hair fibre, reduces moisture loss and makes brittle lengths more supple. On the scalp, a high-quality oil can ease dryness and a feeling of tightness, support the natural balance and prepare the skin for the care products that follow.

It is important to understand that an oil cares for the surface and the immediate environment of the skin. It does not replace targeted scalp care with active ingredients, but is a useful complement to it.

Scalp or lengths: where should the oil go?

The answer depends on your goal. If you want to care for your scalp, apply the oil directly to the skin, not to the hair. If you want to make dry, stressed lengths more supple, work the oil only into the ends and mid-lengths. You can do both at the same time, but each requires different amounts and techniques.

Here we deliberately depart from a common recommendation: even if you tend to have oily roots, apply the oil to your scalp, not just to the lengths. You can read why this works further down, in the section on oily scalps.

Step-by-step guide: hair oil for the scalp

For the scalp, an overnight oil treatment has proven its worth. It gives the oil time to really work, rather than being washed out again after a few minutes.

In the evening

  1. Dampen your hair. Lukewarm water is enough.
  2. Use a little shampoo and leave it on for one to two minutes, then rinse. The time you leave it on matters more than the amount.
  3. Brush your scalp with a boar bristle brush, but only if your scalp has no broken skin. Brushing loosens build-up and prepares the skin for the oil.
  4. Apply 12 to 15 drops of Ayurveda Hair & Scalp Active Oil distributed over the whole head, including the sensitive areas. That sounds like a lot, but spread over the whole head it is very little.
  5. Leave on for three to four hours, or overnight.

The next morning

Wash twice. The first wash lifts the oil, the second cleanses. The second time, leave the shampoo on for two minutes before you rinse.

A tip that saves a lot of trouble: in the first wash, apply the shampoo to dry, oiled hair before adding water. This way it dissolves the oil much better.

Step-by-step guide: hair oil for the lengths

Step 1 — Adjust the amount: for the lengths, 2 to 4 drops are enough, depending on the length and density of your hair. Short hair needs less, long, thick hair a little more.

Step 2 — Apply to damp hair: oil spreads more evenly on slightly damp hair than on dry hair. After washing, gently press your hair with a towel, without rubbing, then work the oil into the lengths.

Step 3 — From the ends upwards: always start at the ends, which are under the most strain, and work your way up. Leave the roots free.

Step 4 — Do not rinse: as a leave-in treatment, the oil stays in the hair. It protects against moisture loss, reduces frizz and adds shine.

The scalp is the soil in which hair grows: it deserves care regardless of whether there is a medical diagnosis, and of what that diagnosis is. YELASAI does not replace medical treatment, but accompanies it with cosmetic care.

Hair oil as an oil pack: how the intensive treatment works

A weekly oil pack is particularly effective for dry, coloured or stressed hair. Apply the oil generously to the scalp and lengths, wrap your hair in a warm towel and leave everything on for 30 to 60 minutes. The warmth opens the hair cuticle and improves the absorption of the nourishing ingredients.

If you want to boost the care effect further, follow the oil application with Ayurveda Hair & Scalp Active Masque. It strengthens the hair structure, provides moisture and adds visible shine.

Leave-on time: five to ten minutes are already enough. If you have more time, you can leave it on for up to 60 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly.

If you have long hair, finish with Ayurveda Hair Active Conditioner. It closes the cuticle again after the hair has absorbed the nutrients, so your hair stays smooth, shiny and easier to comb.

Oily scalp: why this is exactly when oil belongs on the scalp

If your hair gets oily quickly, you probably avoid oil at the roots. That is understandable, but it leads in the wrong direction. One of the reasons a scalp produces a lot of oil is a lack of moisture. The 12 to 15 drops promote the skin's moisture exchange, and balanced skin has to produce less oil.

For this to work, three things go together:

  1. The oil goes on the scalp, not just on the lengths.
  2. Brush regularly with a boar bristle brush. It picks up excess oil and distributes it into the lengths, where it cares for the hair instead of being a nuisance.
  3. Wash less often. If possible, only every other day instead of daily.

The most important thing first: give yourself five to six weeks. At the beginning, brushing actually brings more oil to the surface, so things look worse for a short time before they get better. This is exactly the point where most people give up. Those who stick with it are, as a rule, very happy with their scalp again afterwards.

A practical trick: brush your scalp before washing your hair too. This brings the oil to the surface, where the shampoo can reach it more easily, and you can often skip one wash day a week.

For a very oily scalp

Apply Ayurveda Scalp Active Peeling to your scalp and leave it there: it is not washed out. It binds the oil with natural substances, dries and is then no longer visible.

How often should you use hair oil?

For the scalp, an oil pack once or twice a week is recommended. As a light leave-in treatment for the lengths, the oil can be used after every hair wash. Daily use of larger amounts, on the other hand, leads to build-up and weighs the hair down.

If you have fine hair, use it more sparingly on the lengths; on the scalp it stays at 12 to 15 drops. If your scalp is very dry or sensitive, you can leave the oil on overnight and wash it out the next morning.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

Too much oil: the most common mistake. Excessive amounts leave residue, weigh the hair down and clog the pores of the scalp.

Oil on dry hair without leave-on time: without sufficient leave-on time, the oil cannot penetrate the hair structure and stays on the surface.

Giving up too early: if you switch to brushing and oil with an oily scalp, you will often see more oil rather than less in the first few weeks. This is normal and passes: the result shows after five to six weeks.

Rinsing incorrectly: water alone does not dissolve oil. Always apply shampoo to dry, oiled hair first, then add water.

How does hair oil fit into a complete scalp care routine?

Hair oil is a valuable building block, but it is no substitute for targeted scalp care. In the YELASAI system, the scalp is the focus: only when the scalp is in good condition can hair grow and develop optimally.

A sensible sequence looks like this: gentle cleansing with a mild shampoo, followed by the oil pack, then a targeted scalp care product such as Hair Active Tonic, which supports the natural balance of the scalp and provides moisture. The oil and the tonic complement each other, because the oil prepares the skin and the tonic acts specifically on the scalp.

Frequently asked questions about hair oil

The questions we are asked most often.

As a light leave-in treatment for the lengths, daily use of small amounts is possible. For the scalp, an oil pack once or twice a week is recommended. Daily use of larger amounts leads to build-up and weighs the hair down.

Both are possible and serve different purposes. Applied before washing, the oil works as an oil pack and protects the hair fibre during washing. Applied to damp lengths after washing, it serves as a leave-in treatment that locks in moisture and reduces frizz.

Usually the amount is too large or the oil was not washed out properly. For the lengths, 2 to 4 drops are enough. When washing it out, always apply shampoo to dry, oiled hair first, before any water is added, so that the oil dissolves completely.

Yes, an oil developed specifically for the scalp can ease dryness and a feeling of tightness and support the natural balance of the scalp. It is important to choose an oil formulated for the scalp and to apply it in small amounts directly to the skin, not to the hair.
